Spyware is a hidden tracking program (malicious monitoring software) that is installed on the computer without users knowledge or consent to secretly trace surfing activities and harvest private information from the compromised machine, such as browsing history, credit card numbers, login names, passwords and other sensitive personal data.
This kind of malware files may change the default web browser home page, search page or error page and redirect hijacked browsers and searchers to specific unwanted webpages.
A spyware can also alter general system configurations like task list processes, background wallpaper, tray icons and shortcuts. Some spyware may install undesirable favorite bookmarks, cookies, toolbars, and various adware files generating frustrating mass popup advertisements on the hijacked desktop or browser (both online and offline).

Spyware can forward captured keystrokes, print screen snapshots, logged email, chat and other user activities via background Internet connection to remote servers for future market research or malicious activities.
